We are incredibly sorry about the closure of the school and are just as anxious as you must be to get the children back in as soon as possible. We would like to reassure you that we will do everything that we can when the children return to school to make sure that this unfortunate closure doesn’t impact upon the children’s SATs tests. Some of the tests have been carried out and the children have been calm and stress-free, able to make us all proud. We will do everything we can to make sure that the children are fully prepared and able to achieve their best in the upcoming tests.

In the meantime there are a few things that you could help your child with at home to continue to prepare them.

Reading-please continue to read your child’s reading books and library books, asking them key questions about the text. Examples of questions could be:

Who is the main character in the story? Where is the story set? What is the subject of this non-fiction book? Can you re-tell the main events? How does the character feel in this part of the story? Which words does the author use to tell you…? How do you know that…? What was the problem in the story? Find a word that means the same as …

Encourage your child to refer back to the text when answering these questions.

Reading/Spelling.

Here is a picture of the common exception words that the children are expected to be able to both read and spell. If your child can practise reading and spelling the common exception words this would have a great impact on their progress.

Writing- there are a number of writing opportunities that you can suggest to your child. If they do anything exciting they can write a recount about what they have done, remembering to include time openers, (first, then, next, after that) conjunctions, (and, but, so, because, which) adjectives (describing words) as well as using different punctuation where appropriate. In class they have done a lot of work around Space and have designed their own aliens. Currently they have written a planet setting description and have thought about what they could do with their alien on the peculiar planet. They could write a character description of their alien using adjectives and similes or, to prepare for our upcoming literacy lessons, they could think about what the problem is going to be in their story (a creature erupts from the ground and tries to eat them) thinking about how they can make this exciting and interesting for the reader.

Maths- here are a few ideas of maths activities that you could work on with your child.

Money- make sure that they recognise all of the coins and understand their values. Can they add different amounts of money or make the same amount of money using different coins? They could role play going to a shop and buying two items, working out how much they would cost and then how much change they would get from £1.

They could revise the 2D and 3D shape names and properties, going on a shape hunt around the house, describing the shapes that they find.

Linked to measures they could do activities such as baking, weighing out the ingredients and reading the scales, comparing amounts of liquids or reading the scale on a thermometer.

They could also look at time, practising telling the time to the nearest 15 minutes as well as practising their 2, 5, 10 and 3 times tables. I’m sure if you have a dice they will teach you their new favourite multiplication game or they could teach you how to play ‘Bing Bong Zong’ to practise their odd and even numbers.

These are just some ideas for activities that you could carry out at home, please do not feel that you have to complete every activity on the list.

We really do hope to see your child’s smiling little face tomorrow, but will keep you updated as soon as we hear anything.

Thank you,

Year 2

As part of Science week we have been learning all about Space. Yesterday we took part in a reading trail to find out and answer questions about the planets. This morning we have been finding out as much information as we can about Space. We loved it!

Linked to our Lost and Found topic, the children have used a range of mediums to create some outstanding artwork. We have cute painted penguins, calm chalk sea scenes and terrifying pastel storms. We think you will be flabbergasted when you visit the art exhibition next week.

Here is a little sneak peek!

We love dressing up in Year 2 and we were very impressed by the range of book characters who turned up to school to celebrate the 19th World Book Day. Everyone looked amazing! Here are just a few pictures from the day. Do you know what books the characters are from?

This week we were intrigued to find out all about Shakespeare  who died  400 years ago! On Wednesday we thoroughly enjoyed our history workshop where we learnt so much about Shakespeare and life in his times, some of us even got to join in! In the afternoon, we continued our learning quest and worked in pairs to go on a reading trail! We had to read lots of information and answer questions about the main man himself. We had so much fun and learnt lots too! Thanks to Miss Kingsley and Miss Higgins for their wonderful ideas.

This term the children in Year 2 have been busy creating their own biscuit bears who will star in their Biscuit Bear adventure stories. They thought carefully about how to decorate their bears to reflect their personalities using brightly coloured icing and a variety of sprinkles and decorations. The bears looked good enough to eat!!

This morning, Year 2 were very alarmed to find that somebody had broken into the classroom and left a peculiar mess in the middle of the night! Using their impressive detective skills, the children analysed the clues and collected evidence, before creating a ‘wanted poster’ to help to identify the suspect. As they had found baking ingredients, and there were little paw prints left in the flour, most of the children thought that the intruder might have been a bear…

We have been working hard to improve our instruction writing skills and understanding a balanced diet. To practise this we really enjoyed making pitta pizzas. We did every step ourselves and wrapped up our healthy, delicious pittas to take home. Then we had to use our WIN list to write detailed instructions that anyone could follow to make one themselves.

Fruit Tasting

As part of our health topic we spent Thursday morning tasting lots of different fruit. This was in preparation for our visit from Sweet Express who will be making smoothies with us. We tried lots of different fruit and some juice in our groups to decide on the ingredients for our smoothies. After tasting the fruit, we completed a tally chart and bar chart to show which were the most popular fruits.

We then used this to come up with an amazing name, a persuasive slogan and an eye-catching design that would stand out in any shop. Keep an eye out for more on our smoothie designing and making!image
